EMI Formula & Calculation
EMI Formula
EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1]
Where:
- P = Loan Amount (Principal)
- R = Monthly Interest Rate (Annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
- N = Number of monthly installments (Tenure in months)
How Each Variable Works
P (Principal): This is the total amount you borrow. For example, if you take a $5,00,000 personal loan, P = 500000.
R (Monthly Rate): Banks give you a yearly interest rate. Divide it by 12 to get the monthly rate. Then divide by 100 to convert it to a decimal. For a 12% yearly rate: R = 12 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.01.
N (Installments): This is your loan tenure in months. A 2-year loan means N = 24.
Example Calculation
- Loan Amount: $1,00,000
- Annual Interest Rate: 12%
- Tenure: 12 months
First, find R: 12 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.01
Then apply the formula:
EMI = [100000 × 0.01 × (1.01)^12] / [(1.01)^12 − 1]
EMI = [1000 × 1.1268] / [0.1268]
EMI ≈ $8,885 per month
Total Payment = $8,885 × 12 = $1,06,620
Total Interest Paid = $1,06,620 − $1,00,000 = $6,620
